How to Travel from Krabi to Khao Sok

Getting from Krabi to Khao Sok is a doddle, with several options to suit your budget and pace. The journey spans roughly 150 kilometres, and here’s how you can make it happen:

Minivan: The most popular choice, shared minivans depart from Krabi Town, Ao Nang, or even Krabi Airport. They take about 2.5 to 3 hours and cost between 350 THB and 450 THB per person. Comfortable and air-conditioned, they drop you off near Khao Sok Village or your accommodation if arranged in advance.

Private Taxi: Fancy a bit more comfort? A private taxi will whisk you away in around 2.5 hours for 2,500 THB to 3,000 THB. It’s perfect if you’re travelling with mates or lugging extra gear.

Bus: For the budget-conscious, public buses from Krabi Bus Station to Surat Thani stop near Khao Sok. The ride takes about 3 to 4 hours and costs around 200 THB to 300 THB, though you’ll need a short taxi hop (about 50 THB) from the drop-off to your lodging.

No ferries or speedboats here - this is an inland adventure! Booking ahead is wise, especially during peak season, to snag the best rates and schedules.

Weather and Seasons of Khao Sok All Year Round

Khao Sok’s tropical climate keeps things warm and humid, but the seasons shape your experience:

Dry Season (December to April): The golden window, with temperatures between 25°C and 32°C, clear skies, and calm lakes. It’s ideal for hiking, boating, and wildlife spotting, though it’s also the busiest time - expect more visitors.

Hot Season (March to May): Things crank up to 35°C or higher. It’s still dry, but the heat and humidity can be intense. Fewer crowds make it a quieter escape if you can handle the sizzle.

Rainy Season (May to November): Monsoons roll in, bringing heavy rain and occasional storms. Temperatures hover around 27°C to 30°C, but trails get muddy, and lake tours might be choppy. The upside? Lush greenery and lower prices.

For prime conditions, aim for December to February. If you’re after a bargain and don’t mind a shower, the rainy season has its charm—just pack a poncho!

Luxury: Floating bungalows on Cheow Lan Lake, such as at top resorts, start at 5,000 THB per night. Think private decks and all-inclusive vibes - worth the splurge.

How to Save Money on Travel in Khao Sok

Keen to keep costs down? Try these tips:

Travel Off-Peak: Visit during the rainy season (May to November) for cheaper accommodation and tours - rates can drop by 30% or more.

Book Shared Minivans: Opt for the 350 THB minivan from Krabi over a pricier taxi to save a chunk of change.

Eat Local: Skip touristy spots and grab meals at village stalls - think 50 THB for a tasty curry versus 150 THB at a resort.

Group Tours: Join others for lake or jungle tours (around 1,500 THB per person) instead of private ones (4,000 THB+).

Stay in the Village: Bungalows here are far cheaper than lake resorts, leaving more Baht for activities.

A little savvy planning means more jungle fun for less.

How Many Days Should I Spend in Khao Sok?

Your stay depends on what you’re after:

1 Day: A whirlwind day trip from Krabi works for a quick lake tour and a peek at the scenery, but it’s rushed.

2-3 Days: The sweet spot - enough time for an overnight lake tour, a trek, and some downtime. Most visitors find this just right.

4+ Days: Perfect for slow travellers wanting to canoe, hike multiple trails, and fully unwind in the jungle.

For a solid taste of Khao Sok, 2-3 days is ideal - long enough to explore, short enough to pair with a Krabi beach break.

Where to Eat in Khao Sok

Khao Sok’s dining scene is simple but delicious, mostly clustered in Khao Sok Village:

Local Stalls: Grab pad Thai or chicken skewers for 50 THB to 70 THB - quick, cheap, and authentic.

Pawn’s Restaurant: A village fave, serving spicy som tam (papaya salad) or massaman curry for around 120 THB.

Khao Sok Riverside Cottages Restaurant: Offers river views and dishes like fried rice or fresh fish for 150 THB to 200 THB.

Pizza at Coco Hostel: Craving a treat? Wood-fired pizzas here go for 200 THB - perfect after a day of trekking.

Lake Resort Dining: If you’re staying on Cheow Lan, meals (often included) feature Thai staples like tom yum for 300 THB or so.

From street eats to sit-down meals, you’ll find plenty to fuel your adventures.

Trip from Krabi to Khoa Sok
It wasn’t a good experience at all. We’ve received by mail the wrong time that we would be picked up at our hotel. After 2 calls (by ourselves), a taxi drove us to the bus (the bus who have should picked us up at our hotel). The trip was very long, it took us 1,5 more than the expected arrival time. The driver didn’t drove that good, he was in a hurry on very dangerous points. So, I won’t recommend this travel agency by any other travellers. Greets, Loes Hermans, The Netherlands

Journey went well. The pickup expected to be between 5.15 and 5.45 happened just at about 6.35. The rest was nice

Worst drive ever!
It all started when we had to wait an hour extra because the bus leaves at four and our tickets were for three o'clock. Our busdriver drove like crazy! Very dangerously and fast and it was raining! He stopped almost 20 times to deliver packages which made the drive longer and longer! No fun at all!

Istead of 90min it took us 4hours. It was not a big bus. We had to take a minibus and also change the minibus after 20minutes. I did an email to the office and they told me to answer it the next day, but they didnt. Can not recommend kohlife!
